Omar Abdullah criticises 'Gen Z' rhetoric, says using it as a threat could erode goodwill

Jammu and Kashmir [India], August 19 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday criticised what he described as the growing use of "Gen Z" as a threat in response to perceived affronts, saying such rhetoric could undermine the goodwill associated with the younger generation.
Reacting to a social media post claiming that members of Gen Z would not tolerate alleged mistreatment of Kashmiris and tourists, Abdullah said the phrase "we are Gen Z" was increasingly being used in a threatening manner.
"This 'we are Gen Z' has become the new 'jaantay nahin ho mera baap kaun hai'," Abdullah said in a post on social media.
He said using the identity of a generation as a threat whenever someone feels slighted was counterproductive and could damage the positive perception of Gen Z.
"The quickest way to erode any Gen Z goodwill is to start using it as a threat at the slightest perceived affront," Abdullah said.
His remarks came in response to a social media post by an account that claimed that Gen Z would not tolerate alleged mistreatment and referred to both Kashmiris and tourists.
The post included a video showing a woman at what appeared to be a tourist location. The woman is seen shouting at officials for blocking the road.
Abdullah's reaction focused on the broader manner in which generational identity is being invoked on social media. He cautioned against turning the term "Gen Z" into a form of intimidation or entitlement.
The Chief Minister's comments come amid continuing discussions on the treatment of tourists and visitors in Jammu and Kashmir, where tourism is an important part of the local economy.
His comments also highlighted the potential consequences of associating an entire generation with confrontational behaviour. By warning against using "Gen Z" as a threat, Abdullah argued that such references could undermine the goodwill and positive image otherwise associated with young people. (ANI)
