East Singhbhum (Jharkhand) [India], October 26 (ANI): Congress candidate from Jamshedpur East Ajay Kumar on Saturday accused Odisha Governor Raghubar Das of distributing money for the election of his daughter-in-law.
Speaking to ANI, Congress leader Kumar said, "Odisha's Governor is distributing money at booths. 10 lakh people have to vacate their houses in Odisha, such is the condition there, but Raghubar Das is busy distributing money for the election of his daughter-in-law... If he wants to contest the election, he should resign and then contest."
Congress' Ajoy Kumar is pitted against BJP candidate and Odisha Governor Raghubar Das' daughter-in-law, Purnima Das in the Jamshedpur East assembly constituency for the upcoming Jharkhand assembly polls.
Earlier on Friday, Congress leader Ajoy Kumar wrote to the Election Commission over Odisha Governor Raghubar Das' alleged involvement in Jharkhand election campaigning for his daughter-in-law, claiming that it is a violation of the model code of conduct. He has requested the commission to bar the Odisha Governor from participating in active politics.
In a letter dated October 25 to the Election Commissioner of India, Ajoy Kumar said, "In continuance to my letter dated 23-October (Ref 76/2024), this is to bring to your notice again that Raghubar Das, Governor of Odisha, continues to campaign for his daughter-in-law, Purnima Das contesting from 48, Jamshedpur East, on a Bharatiya Janata Party ticket."
"It is also brought to your kind notice that as per the information received, the Governor of Odisha Raghubar Das was found participating in election booth committee meetings in east Jamshedpur constituency and was found distributing various materials in the public," Kumar said in the letter.
"The above act of the Governor of Odisha establishes a major concern that has been highlighted by me via various press conferences hence there is an urgent need for the Election Commission of India to intervene. In light to the above circumstances and my repeated complaints, I request to issue appropriate directions to restrain Raghubar Das from such participation in active politics," he said in the letter.
Earlier while speaking to ANI, Ajoy Kumar said that improving educational facilities in the constituency will be one of his priorities if he wins the election.
"If we make good government schools, then our children will study in good schools with zero fees. They will be in English-medium schools," Ajoy Kumar told ANI.
Voting in Jharkhand will be held in two phases--November 13 and 20. Votes will be counted on November 23. (ANI)
