"No voice for a Dalit son": Congress leader tears into BJP over IPS officer death

Virudhunagar (Tamil Nadu) [India], October 14 (ANI): Congress leader Manickam Tagore addressed the tragic death of IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar. He stated that the last rites of the late IPS officer are yet to be done, even after 6 days of his demise.
On his X account, the Congress leader accused the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Haryana chief minister of protecting DGP Shatrujeet Kapoor and remaining silent without taking any action. He slammed into the BJP, underlining that the party leaders have demonstrated radio silence on the matter.
"Today marks the 6th day since the tragic death of Telugu bidda IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar. Yet, his last rites remain unperformed. The family stands firm in their demand -- remove Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Kapoor, the man under whose casteist regime this tragedy unfolded. But the BJP's Haryana CM continues to shield the DGP. And what are @ncbn, @ysjagan & @PawanKalyan doing? Absolute silence. No outrage. No solidarity. No voice for a Dalit son who wore the uniform with pride. Is a Dalit mother's son's life so cheap for the BJP and its B-Team in Andhra Pradesh? Why this cowardly silence from all three leaders when justice cries out from the soil of Haryana? When the powerful stay silent in the face of injustice, they become partners in oppression. History will remember this silence, not the excuses. #JusticeForPuranKumar #DalitLivesMatter," he wrote on X.
Earlier, Congress MP and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi met with the family of IPS Puran Kumar and called for urgent action in the case, stressing that the matter is not just affecting one family but "millions of Dalits" across the country.
Speaking to mediapersons in Chandigarh, Gandhi said, "They are a Dalit couple and one thing is clear that there was systematic discrimination for years to demoralise this officer and to damage his career and his reputation by other officers. This is not just a matter of one family. There are crores of Dalit brothers and sisters in the country, and they are getting the wrong message. The message that no matter how successful, intelligent, or capable you are, if you are a Dalit, you can be suppressed and thrown out. This is not acceptable for us. As the LoP, my message to PM Modi and CM Saini is that you should allow the funeral procession of the officer to take place and stop this drama. The clear message I want to give to PM Modi and CM Saini is to take action against the officers and release the pressure on this family..."
The Congres MP urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini to fulfil their commitment to the officer's family by taking immediate action against the officers responsible, ensuring a fair inquiry, and providing respect to the deceased IPS officer and his family.
The statements follow the death of a Senior IPS officer, Y. Puran Kumar, who died in Chandigarh under suspicious circumstances. He succumbed to a gunshot wound on October 7, 2025.
Afterwards, his wife, senior IAS officer Amneet P. Kumar, has made some serious accusations against Haryana Director General of Police (DGP) Shatrujeet Singh Kapoor and Superintendent of Police (SP) Rohtak Narendra Bijarnia. She is demanding a registration of an FIR against the two of them.
Kumar's wife has filed a written complaint to the police, where she stated that her husband had been facing caste-based discrimination, mental harassment, and humiliation for a long time. She also claimed that before his death, her husband had left behind a suicide note mentioning the harassment he suffered at the hands of senior officers.
She further alleged that the accused officers, holding powerful positions, could influence the course of the investigation, and therefore, immediate arrests and an impartial probe are essential. The complaint seeks registration of a case under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (formerly Section 306 IPC (abetment to suicide).
The matter has attracted significant attention due to the high-ranking positions of both the deceased and the accused individuals. (ANI)
