Purulia (West Bengal) [India], April 23 (ANI): BJP West Bengal chief and Union Minister of State for Education, Sukanta Majumdar, on Wednesday issued a strong warning in response to Tuesday's terror attack in Pahalgam, saying that those responsible will face severe consequences and that "no one will be spared" in connection with the gruesome act.
Speaking to ANI in the aftermath of the tragic attack, Majumdar condemned the act and said that India had responded strongly to terror in the past and will continue to do so under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
He noted that it was a "planned" attack on the Hindus, implying that the terrorists enquired about the victim's religion before killing them.
"This is a tragic incident... The way they were killed after enquiring if they were Hindus shows that it was a planned attack on us... We have seen such incidents and attacks in India before, and we have given a befitting reply to those attacks... Terrorism is a big curse for the whole world, and we will end this under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Action will be taken against everyone who is guilty of this incident," he said.
His comments come a day after terrorists opened fire on a group of tourists in the Baisaran meadow area of Pahalgam, claiming multiple lives and sparking nationwide outrage. The central government has since ramped up security across the region, while Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited the site and reviewed the situation on the ground.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has also arrived at the site to assist local authorities in investigating the attack.
The NIA team - led by a Deputy Inspector General-rank officer - visited Baisaran a day after terrorists gunned down a group of tourists in the picturesque meadow, which is located around five kilometres from Pahalgam town in Kashmir's Anantnag district.
Official sources privy to the development told ANI that "the NIA team members will be assisting the Jammu and Kashmir Police in the investigation."
The NIA's assistance to J-K Police underscores a key role in the overall investigation, as Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba's proxy, the Resistance Front (TRF), has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The NIA team is expected to conduct a thorough assessment of the attack site, collect forensic evidence, and help in identifying those responsible for the carnage. (ANI)
