New Delhi [India], March 19 (ANI): BJP leader Gourav Vallabh welcomed the upcoming visit of six Supreme Court judges to violence-affected Manipur and said that there are no objections to their visit to assess the situation and bolster legal and humanitarian support in the state.
The delegation comprising Justices BR Gavai, Surya Kant, Vikram Nath, MM Sundresh, KV Viswanathan and N Kotishwar will visit Manipur relief camps on March 22.
Speaking to ANI about their visit, Vallabh said that the people of Manipur have chosen the path of peace and development and pointed out that despite attempts by several political groups to exploit the situation in the state over the past year, the people have focused on progress and harmony.
"There is no objection if the judges of the Supreme Court want to go to Manipur, but the people of the state have chosen the road for peace and development. Many people in the state tried to shine their politics in Manipur in the past year, but the people of the state have made them unsuccessful," said Vallabh.
"Manipur is going to become a model of development in the country, and everyone there has chosen peace. Rest if the judges of the apex court want to visit, they should; there is no objection," he added.
Justice Gavai, the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), will virtually inaugurate legal services camps and medical camps across all districts of Manipur, as well as new legal aid clinics in Imphal East, Imphal West and Ukhrul districts.
There will also be distribution of essential relief materials to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).
The legal services camps will connect IDPs with government welfare programs, ensuring access to vital benefits such as healthcare, pensions, employment schemes, and identity document reconstruction.
Meanwhile, on March 11, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman assured the Parliament that the government was providing all assistance to violence-hit Manipur to speed up its economic recovery.
"We are providing all the potential assistance to support a faster recovery of the (Manipur) economy. For Manipur, I (would) like to put for consideration for all members we will continuously support so that the recovery is faster," she told Lok Sabha, responding to the discussion on Supplementary Demands for Grants for the year 2024-25, Demands for Additional Grants for the year 2021-22 and Budget of Manipur for the year 2025-26.
The supplementary demand for grants for 2024-25 of Manipur, worth Rs 1,861 crore, was also placed on the table. It covers 20 demands and one appropriation; Rs 948 crore is being sought for revenue expenditure, and Rs 913 crore is for capital expenditure. (ANI)
