New Delhi [India], August 19 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Jagdambika Pal on Tuesday defended the Election Commission and accused opposition parties of attempting to create confusion and "weaken" the constitutional institution without presenting evidence.
Pal criticised the opposition for campaigning in Bihar during the ongoing Parliament session, accusing them of having "no faith in democracy" and of stirring unrest on the streets.
"The Parliament session is ongoing, and they are roaming around in Bihar. They have no faith in democracy. They are trying to spread confusion among people on the streets of Bihar," Pal told ANI.
He stressed that the Commission has been clear in asking opposition leaders to submit evidence within seven days regarding their allegations of electoral malpractice.
"The Election Commissioner has told them that if you do not provide evidence within 7 days, it is clear that you only want to create confusion and weaken the constitutional institution," Pal said.
The BJP MP further questioned the opposition's claims, pointing out that they had won elections in several states despite alleging flaws in the system. "Today, they have governments in many states. Akhilesh Yadav has won so many seats in Uttar Pradesh. How did they win?" he asked.
His comments came as the opposition continued its 'Voter Adhikar Yatra' in Bihar, launched against the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list and alleged 'vote chori'.
The 16-day yatra, covering more than 1,300 km across over 20 districts, is scheduled to conclude in Patna on September 1.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday continued the third day of his 'Voter Adhikar Yatra' from Gaya.
Earlier in the day, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav criticised Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, claiming he failed to provide factual answers during his press conference.
"He has not yet given any clear answer with facts... Tell us why people who were alive were declared dead. There are thousands of such examples that we can present. He has just read what he got from the PMO. He is saying only what he was told. If he has taken membership in the BJP, then he should tell. What is there to be ashamed of in this?" Tejashwi told ANI.
