Supreme Court

New Delhi [India], Oct 23 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to put a blanket ban on the sale of firecrackers across the country.
A division bench of the apex court, headed by Justice Arjan Kumar Sikri and comprising Justice Ashok Bhushan, said, "No blanket ban on the sale of firecrackers across the country."
The top court, however, said that green firecrackers - which are less polluting- may be sold in the market.
The court also observed that those who fail to comply with its orders would invite contempt proceedings.
The sale of firecrackers on e-commerce portals has been banned by the top court in its order. Fireworks will only be allowed between 8 pm and 10 pm on Diwali (November 7) and between 11:45 pm and 12:30 am on Christmas and New Year.
"Supreme Court's orders are not very strict. We were expecting a complete ban, but that has not happened. Crackers will be allowed, but there will be time restrictions," Vijay Panjwani, advocate of Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), said.
The court passed the order on three toddler petitions - including those by Arjun Gopal and Pooja Dhar - seeking a complete ban on the sale of firecrackers across the country. (ANI)
