Patna (Bihar) [India], November 9 (ANI): Amid Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar coming under fire for his controversial comments on women's education, Janata Dal-United (JDU) President Rajiv Ranjan said that while Kumar has apologised for his mistake, will Prime Minister Narendra Modi apologise for his derogatory comments on women in the past?
"Speaking on fertility rate, Nitish Kumar used some words that should not have been spoken. The chief minister has expressed regret for it. The matter is closed. He felt that he should not have spoken those words. Now let us play some audio clips of the Prime Minister. Has the PM ever expressed regret for the words he used in the past?" Rajiv Ranjan told ANI on Thursday.
The JDU president said that he has read the speech given by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and the statements were made while speaking on the fertility rate in the Vidhan Sabha.
"I have read the speech given by Honourable Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in Vidhan Sabha. He (CM Nitish Kumar) made the statement in the state assembly while talking about the fertility rate in the state," Ranjan said.
"The work Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has done for the empowerment of women shows how much he respects women," he added.
On Tuesday, speaking on the floor of the Assembly, the Bihar Chief Minister said women should be educated as it would enable them to avoid sexual intercourse resulting in pregnancy.
Addressing the Winter Session of the Assembly during a debate on caste census on Tuesday, the CM made bizarre remarks while underscoring the need for girls' education to check population growth in the state.
Nonetheless, Kumar on Wednesday apologised for his remarks in the Assembly.
"I apologise, and I take back my words," he told reporters after BJP legislators did not allow him to enter the legislative assembly.
The Bharatiya Janata Party, meanwhile, got fresh ammunition to target Nitish Kumar, a tall leader in the opposition INDIA bloc, over his statement in the Assembly. (ANI)
