Nirav Modi fraud: Congress poses 5 questions for PM

New Delhi [India], Feb. 15 (ANI): The Congress Party on Thursday posed five questions to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government in connection with the Nirav Modi fraud case.

Accusing the Centre of double speak Congress leader Randeep Surjewala while addressing a press conference here said, "This is a classical double speak of BJP involving diverting attention and relying upon half-baked truth,"

Congress' questions are as follows-:

- "Who is responsible for the scam by Nirav Modi?

- Were all the departments under the Modi government asleep, and why?

- Punjab National Bank (PNB) chief had told the government that these men would escape. Despite this, how did these men escape?

- How did the government not spot the biggest banking scam so far?

- Who is the person who has given security to this scam?

- How did the risk management system of the banking sector not work?" asked Surjewala.

"These questions need to be answered by the prime minister," added Surjewala.

Meanwhile, Surjewala in a sardonic attack also said that 'Chota Modi' (Nirav Modi) went to Davos as part of the business delegation which accompanied the prime minister and also alleged that Prime Minister Modi knew about the scam already

"The prime minister was told about the scam," added the Congress leader.

Surjewala further accused the Centre of destroying the banking system and urged the prime minister to not mislead people.

"The prime minister should break his silence and stop misleading the people," said Randeep Surjewala. "Why has the prime minister not put out a single tweet on the fraud?" asked the Congress leader.

Managing Director of PNB Sunil Mehta said that the scam was started in 2011 and was detected in the third week of January this year, after which the PNB officials reported it to the concerned agencies.

Mehta further said that the Government of India is monitoring the situation and the bank is getting full support in nabbing the culprits.

Nirav had allegedly cheated the bank to the tune of Rs. 280.7 crore.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had on Monday booked Nirav Modi, his brother Nishal Modi and some officials of PNB in this regard. (ANI)
