Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], October 4 (ANI): NCP-SCP chief Sharad Pawar addressed the issue of Maratha reservation on Friday, emphasising the need for a legal amendment to increase the current reservation cap from 50 per cent to 75 per cent.
While addressing a press conference, Pawar stated that there is a general sentiment among people for the need for reservations. However, he acknowledged that while seeking reservations is valid, it is important to ensure that existing reservations for other communities are not compromised.
"Everyone has this feeling that they should get reservation. There is nothing wrong with this. But while doing this, we should also keep in mind that the reservation that other people are getting should also be protected. It should not be harmed in any way," he said.
Pawar pointed out the current limit of 50 per cent on reservations and emphasised that any increase would require a legal amendment. He proposed that the reservation cap could be raised to 75 per cent, which would allow for additional reservations for those currently not covered.
He urged the central government to take action in this regard and suggested that they should introduce a proposal to change the law.
Pawar further affirmed that his party would fully support any such proposal brought forward by the government.
"According to the current form of reservation, reservations above 50 per cent cannot be given and if the reservation has to be taken above 50 per cent then according to me, the law will have to be changed. What objection does anyone have to changing the law? Right now there is reservation up to 50 per cent, it can be increased to 75 per cent," he said.
"At present the reservation is 50 per cent and if it is made 75 per cent then there will be 25 per cent more reservations, so in such a situation, those who have not gotten reservations will also be given reservations. My clear opinion is that the central government should take further steps in this regard and they should bring a proposal to change the law. All the members from our side will fully support that proposal of the government," he added. (ANI)
