Nagapattinam: Residents bear brunt of cyclone Gaja

Nagapattinam (Tamil Nadu) [India], Nov 17 (ANI): The aftereffect of cyclone Gaja has unsettled the daily lives of large number of residents of Tamil Nadu's Nagapattinam district.
After the cyclone made a landfall here on Thursday night, the electricity supply was disrupted in the district affecting the day-to-day activities of the residents.
Many parts of the district have been facing power-outages and as an alternative measure, the demand of torch light has increased significantly.
Several families and their kids have been struggling owing to the power shortage and students are forced to continue their studies in the light of candles.
Large number of people could also be seen queued at the fuel stations.
Cyclone Gaja had made landfall in the south of Nagapattinam on intervening night of 15-16 November. The district on Friday woke up to the sight of uprooted trees and damaged houses due to the overnight rainfall and strong winds.
The cyclonic storm crossed Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coast between Nagapattinamand Vedaranniyam on Thursday evening and unleashed mayhem in Tiruvarur and Thanjavur districts as well.
On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister E. Palaniswami regarding the situation in the state and assured all possible help on behalf of the Centre.
The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister confirmed that 11 people have lost their lives after the landfall of cyclone Gaja. He also announced that the government will provide Rs 10 lakh to the kin of the deceased, Rs 1 lakh to those injured severely and Rs 25,000 to people who have suffered minor injuries. (ANI)
