Guwahati (Assam) [India], August 10 (ANI): All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has alleged that the law and order situation in Assam has "deteriorated" and Muslims are being "targeted."
The party has demanded to impose the President's Rule in the state.
Speaking to ANI, AIUDF MLA and party General Secretary Rafiqul Islam said that in Assam, Muslims are being "targeted and harassed" and accused Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of "fueling" it.
He further said that not a single Bangladeshi Muslim entered Assam after 1971.
"The law and order situation in Assam is not good, and the Chief Minister has himself been fuelling this. The bonafide Indian citizens are being harassed in Assam, and thousands of people have now become homeless after the state government bulldozed their houses. Especially the Muslims are being targeted. The landless people will go where, the government's responsibility is to rehabilitate the landless people. Non-Muslim people are also in the government lands, if Muslims occupied 30 per cent of the government lands, then Non-Muslims occupied 70 per cent of those lands. But only Muslims are being targeted. We are against this eviction drive carried out by the state government," Rafiqul Islam said.
He further said, "The bonafide Indian citizens from the lower Assam region are being harassed in the upper Assam region. We demand that the Chief Minister resign and that President's Rule be imposed. The Chief Minister has snatched the living rights of these people."
The AIUDF MLA has requested the High Court and Supreme Court to take a suo-moto case on this.
Meanwhile, speaking about the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Bihar electoral rolls, the AIUDF MLA said that after Bihar, the process of SIR in Assam is ready to start. The Chief Electoral Officer of Assam has directed the District Commissioners to be ready for this, and the AIUDF is opposing it.
"There is no need for SIR in Assam. During the NRC process, the people of the state provided all necessary documents to the government, which were then verified at various levels. I think Assam is different compared to the other states of the country," Islam stated.
The AIUDF MLA also supported Congress MP Rahul Gandhi's allegations of "vote theft" and said that many questions have arisen against the Election Commission of India's credibility.
The AIUDF MLA further alleged that after 1971, many Hindu Bengalis came to Assam, and the government has given Indian citizenship to them through the Citizenship Amendment Act.
"But not a single Muslim came to Assam from Bangladesh after 1971. If you (the government) found any Bangladeshi Muslim, then push back on them and we will support you," Rafiqul Islam said. (ANI)
