Mohali (Punjab) [India], September 1 (ANI): Mohali Deputy Commissioner Komal Mittal, accompanied by senior officials, visited the Sukhna Choe's Baltana Bridge site this morning to assess the arrangements being made in view of the increased water flow amid heavy rains in Mohali, Punjab.
The Mohali DC reviewed the situation following the release of additional water from Sukhna Headworks into Sukhna Choe and assured residents that the situation is under control, with no cause for panic. Sukhna Headworks is the structure that created Sukhna Lake in Chandigarh by damming the Sukhna Choe, a seasonal stream from the Shivalik Hills.
DC said that as a precautionary measure, traffic movement has been suspended on the Baltana Bridge and the Mubarakpur Causeway. Officials stated that the step was necessary to prevent any untoward incidents and to ensure the safety of commuters.
Moreover, DC Komal Mittal informed that Additional Deputy Commissioner (Urban Development) Anmol Singh Dhaliwal has been deputed to closely monitor the situation, particularly in the urban local body areas of Zirakpur and Derabassi, which lie along the path of the Sukhna Choe and the Ghaggar River.
While acknowledging that water levels have risen, she clarified that there is no immediate danger to residents. The district administration, she said, is maintaining a constant vigil and has kept all required machinery and manpower on standby to deal with any eventuality. Disaster management teams have also been instructed to remain alert.
The DC appealed to residents living near the banks of the Sukhna Choe and Ghaggar River to avoid venturing close to the water bodies. She advised commuters to use alternative routes as a safety measure.
Reiterating that the situation remains under control, the administration urged citizens not to believe or spread rumours regarding flooding. "We are continuously monitoring the water levels and will inform the public immediately if there is any cause for concern. At present, there is no threat to life or property," DC Komal Mittal said.
