New Delhi [India], August 18 (ANI): On the occasion of the Meghalaya pineapple festival Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Thursday said that farmers of the state should get access to the overseas market so that they could sell more.
Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma said, "In Delhi today, the Meghalaya pineapple festival began. Our farmers grow pineapple for years and in our state around 1.5 lakh metric tonne of production takes place every year. Even after the production, our farmers don't get the right amount of money for our pineapples and at times pineapple rots and don't sell. We thought that our farmers should get access to the overseas markets so that it can reach there and second we can process pineapple and add value to it by making edibles or powder."
CM Sangma further said that the powder from pineapples grown in Meghalaya is used to create flavour in food for children in overseas countries.
He said, "Today we are making clothes and bags from pineapple's fibre. Through this festival, we wish to provide a platform for our farmers and entrepreneurs so that they can take it forward. Today in this event entrepreneurs have gathered with various products as well apart from pineapples." (ANI)
