Gadchiroli (Maharashtra) [India], October 14 (ANI): A hardcore Maoist couple carrying a combined bounty of rupees 10 lakh has surrendered before the security forces in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli on Monday.
The husband-wife includes 27 year old Varun Raja Muchaki, Commander, Bhamragadh LOS and 24 year old Roshani Vijya Wachami, Party Member, Bhamragadh LOS, said police.
According to the Gadchiroli police, the laydown of arms by the husband-wife duo has taken the total count of surrendered Maoists to 674 till date.
Police credited this to effective implementation of the Surrender and Rehabilitation Policy implemented by the Maharashtra government since 2005.
Muchaki joined the Maoist organisation in Konta area in 2015 and worked as a party member. He went on to work as the body guard of DKSZCM Giridhar. From 2020 to 2022, he was the Deputy Commander at Bhamragadh LOS. Since 2022, he has been working as Dalam Commander in Bhamragadh LOS.
He was wanted for 15 crimes, including 10 encounters, killings and five other offences.
His wife, Roshani Wachami, was recruited to the Maoist organisation as a Party Member in Rahi LOS in 2015 and worked as a Party Member. She later worked in Gatta and Aheri LOS.
The couple cited various reasons for surrendering before police, including challenges to leading an independent married life. They further alleged that the senior Maoist leader used to collect money in the name of the movement and use it for themselves.
Earlier this month, Amit Shah held a review meeting with the Chief Ministers of Left Wing Extremism (LWE)-affected states at Vigyan Bhavan.
Addressing that review meeting, Shah appealed to Naxalite youth to lay down their arms and join the mainstream.
He also highlighted that nearly 13,000 individuals have done so in the northeast and Jammu & Kashmir.
31 Naxalites were killed earlier this month in the Maad area on the Narayanpur-Dantewada border in Chhattisgarh. (ANI)
