Guwahati (Assam) [India], December 11 (ANI): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday highlighted the issue of infiltration and announced that the state government will tighten the Aadhaar verification process to ensure that no unauthorised individuals obtain Aadhaar cards.
Addressing a press conference, CM Sarma stated that many infiltrators from Bangladesh have been apprehended by the authorities.
"Assam Police is acting as the second line of defence along the Indo-Bangladesh border in coordination with the Border Security Force (BSF). Many infiltrators from Bangladesh have been apprehended by the BSF, Assam Police, and Tripura Police," he said.
The Chief Minister added that the Assam cabinet has decided to designate the General Administration Department as the nodal agency for Aadhaar card verification. "At the district level, the Deputy Commissioner will appoint one ADC for Aadhaar enrolment verification. We will strengthen the Aadhaar verification process to prevent suspected individuals from obtaining Aadhaar cards," he said.
CM Sarma also announced that 15 lakh new ration cards would be distributed on December 15.
Additionally, the Assam Chief Minister shared plans for an upcoming visit to Bhutan. "I will visit Bhutan from December 16 to 18 to attend their National Day celebrations. During my visit, I will discuss various matters, including hydropower, with the Bhutanese government," he said.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma attended Swahid Divas, organised by the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, at Jamurihat in Sonitpur District.
Speaking on the occasion, he affirmed that the state government is working tirelessly to preserve the identity of the people of Assam while ensuring their development.
"The government is also undertaking delimitation efforts to minimise the influence of infiltrators. Furthermore, the state government has reclaimed 10,000 hectares of encroached land," he said.
The Chief Minister further noted that, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the delimitation exercise across Assam's 126 Legislative Assembly constituencies has secured at least 105 constituencies for indigenous people. (ANI)
