Chandigarh (Punjab) [India], Mar 12 (ANI): Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was never in the reckoning for Amritsar parliamentary constituency as he had made it clear that he was not interested in contesting elections, said Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Tuesday.
"Manmohan Singh was never a candidate from Amritsar. He had told us a long time ago that he is not interested in contesting," he told reporters here.
Amarinder's comments came after reports emerged that the Punjab Congress had floated the name of Manmohan Singh for the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat, after the Punjab Chief Minister, Congress state chief Sunil Jakhar and Asha Kumari, in-charge of state affairs had met the former Prime Minister in Delhi last week.
Captain Amarinder clarified that his meeting with Manmohan Singh was a courtesy call, during which he briefed the former Prime Minister on the Congress' plans in Punjab.
Manmohan Singh served two terms as the Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014. Although the former Prime Minister was never a Lok Sabha MP, he has been representing Assam in the Rajya Sabha since 1991.
The incumbent Lok Sabha MP from Amritsar seat is Congress' Gurjeet Singh Aujla. (ANI)
