Maharashtra rains: "State govt monitoring situation," says BJP state chief Bawankule

Maharashtra BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Saturday said that the state government is monitoring the situation after Nagpur's Ambajhari Dam overflowed following heavy rainfall in several parts of Nagpur.

Nagpur (Maharashtra) [India], September 23 (ANI): Maharashtra BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Saturday said that the state government is monitoring the situation after Nagpur's Ambajhari Dam overflowed following heavy rainfall in several parts of Nagpur.
Visuals from the rainfall-affected areas showed a team of NDRF carrying out rescue operations, helping people to come out from flooded homes and streets.


Waterlogging was also reported at Canal Road Ramdaspeth in Nagpur where locals were stuck in their houses as flood waters gushed into their homes.
The BJP leader said that the city received 110 mm of rainfall in just 3 hours on Friday night and said that as many as 15 people were evacuated by a team of the National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF)
"It rained 110 mm in 3 hours, which is very high. Ambajhari dam has overflowed. There has been incessant rainfall in several areas...15 people have been rescued till now. We are sending the rescue teams following alerts..." he told ANI on Saturday in Nagpur.
He said that Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is "monitoring the situation".
"There is an alert of heavy rainfall till evening; people should avoid leaving their homes today," he said.
Meanwhile, a team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) on Saturday evacuated as many as six people stranded in the Ambajhari Lake area following heavy rainfall in parts of Nagpur city in Maharashtra.
A team was deployed in the rain-affected area to rescue people, NDRF said.
Another video showed a man perching on a window, waiting for the waters to subside following heavy rains in the area.
In a video that went viral on social media, office-goers were seen wading through water-logged roads and submerged public transport buses.
"A team of NDRF conducting floodwater rescue operations and safely evacuated 6 people in the Ambajhari Lake area. Rescue operation is still underway," NDRF said in a brief statement.
The Regional Meteorological Center, Mumbai had predicted heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms over part of Konkan and ghat areas of Madhya in Maharashtra for three days ending today. (ANI)
