Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], Apr 25 (ANI): Congress president Rahul Gandhi has accepted senior leader Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil's resignation as the Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly, state party unit confirmed Thursday.
Patil had sent his letter of resignation to Gandhi last month after his son Sujay Vikhe Patil joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
"The Congress CLP (Congress Legislature Party) leader Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil had offered to resign from the post of CLP and had sent a letter of resignation which has been accepted by the Congress president," Maharashtra Congress chief Ashok Chavan said.
Earlier in the month, Radhakrishna had said that he will not campaign for NCP candidates in the ensuing national elections.
“Sharad Pawar made a statement against my father which shows that he has no respect for me or my family. So, there is no question of me going to campaign for NCP candidate in Ahmednagar. I won't campaign for anyone else either,” the Congress leader had said.
Congress and NCP are contesting elections in an alliance in the state and the Ahmednagar seat has been allocated to the Sharad Pawar-led party.
Sujoy Vikhe Patil had joined BJP in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on March 12 here. Later he was fielded from Ahmednagar Lok Sabha constituency.
Radhakrishna had said that his son did not consult him before jumping the ship.(ANI)
