Sagar (Madhya Pradesh) [India], May 5 (ANI): Nirmala Sapre, the Congress MLA from the Bina assembly seat in Madhya Pradesh's Sagar district, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday.
The defection comes just days before the third phase of the Lok Sabha election on May 7.
Speaking to ANI, Sapre explained her decision, "One cannot bring development to the region while being in Congress, because there's neither a government nor an agenda. When the entire nation and state are experiencing development, why should our Bina be left out?."
She further elaborated on her dissatisfaction with the Congress, saying that in the past six months, she found that her work was "not getting done" in the constituency.
"The way the country's Prime Minister Modi and the state's leader Mohan Yadav have an agenda for development, I realised in the past six months that the development of my Bina assembly constituency was hindered because, when I surveyed the constituency, I had made many promises to the people that I would accomplish a lot. However, in the past six months, I saw that none of my work was getting done," Sapre said.
"Under the leadership of PM Modi and the state's leader, Mohan Yadav, I have come here today to join them for development," she added.
Sapre joined the party in the presence of Chief Minister Mohan Yadav at Rahatgarh.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav presented her with the BJP shawl and administered the party membership to her. She touched his feet to seek his blessings, followed by chants of "Jai Shri Ram."
In the 2023 elections, out of eight assembly constituencies in the Sagar district, Nirmala Sapre was the lone Congress candidate who won the Beena assembly seat.
Lok Sabha polls in Madhya Pradesh are being conducted in four phases. The first phase of polling was held on April 19 and the second phase was concluded on April 26.
The next two phases will be conducted on May 7 and May 13. The counting of votes will be held on June 4.
With 29 Lok Sabha constituencies, Madhya Pradesh ranks sixth among all states in terms of its representation in the Lower House. Of these, 10 seats are reserved for SC and ST candidates, while the remaining 19 are unreserved. (ANI)
