New Delhi [India], December 27 (ANI): Congress leader Sachin Pilot mourned the demise of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday and said that he will always be remembered for his wisdom and invaluable contributions to India's economic growth.
In a post on X, Pilot said, "I pay my deepest respects to Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh ji on his passing. A leader who dedicated his life to serving the nation, he will always be remembered for his wisdom and invaluable contributions to India's economic growth. It was an honor to have worked with him in his cabinet. He was the quintessential gentleman - kind, soft spoken, courteous and humble.A scholar, a visionary, a consensus maker, and a true Congressman. My heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. May his soul find eternal peace."
Congress MP Manish Tewari mentioned that Manmohan Singh had known him from the day he opened his eyes to the world.
"Very Sad to learn about the unfortunate demise of Dr Manmohan Singh, Former Prime Minister of India. My association with Late Dr Manmohan Singh goes back to the time when my parents and Dr Manmohan Singh were neighbours in Panjab University Chandigarh. He knew me almost from the day I opened my eyes in this world. How strange are the ways of God. I was supposed to call on him tomorrow (Saturday) in the morning," he posted on X.
"Soft Spoken, Erudite, intelligent but firm he was an inspiration for millions of young people for whom he opened up the doors of opportunity with the Economic liberalisation in 1991. All through the years I shared a very warm personal relationship with him including serving as Union Minister of Information & Broadcasting in his government. I recall anchoring his Mega Press Conference on 3rd January 2014 where he gave an exhaustive overview of his 10 years as Prime Minister. Adieu Sir .... Another world awaits," Tewari added.
Punjab Minister and Aam Aadmi Party leader Aman Arora also condoled the demise of the former Prime Minster.
"Truly saddened by the loss of Dr Manmohan Singh ji, a visionary leader, unparalleled economist & a humble Statesman & a son of its soil, Punjab, who made all Countrymen proud," Arora said.
Manmohan Singh passed away at AIIMS, Delhi, on Thursday evening at the age of 92 due to age-related medical conditions. He had a sudden loss of consciousness at home after which he was rushed to the AIIMS Delhi.
President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, and leaders across the political spectrum condoled Manmohan Singh's death.
Manmohan Singh was born on September 26, 1932. Apart from being an economist, Manmohan Singh served as Reserve Bank of India governor from 1982-1985. He was the 13th PM of India with his tenure from 2004-2014 and was the longest-serving PM after Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi.
Serving as the finance minister of India in PV Narsimha Rao's government, Singh has been given credit for economic liberalisation in the country in 1991. The reforms made the Indian economy more accessible to foreign investors, which increased FDI and reduced government control. It greatly contributed to the country's economic growth.
Manmohan Singh's government also introduced the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA), which later came to be known as MGNREGA.
The Right to Information Act (RTI) was passed in 2005 under the Manmohan Singh government, which made the transparency of information between the government and the public better.
Dr Manmohan Singh retired from the Rajya Sabha earlier this year after serving for 33 years. (ANI)
