Ladakh [India], October 2 (ANI): Ladakh's Member of Parliament, Mohmad Haneefa, was released by the Delhi police, the MP confirmed.
Haneefa was detained by Delhi police on Tuesday, a day after more than hundred protesters from Ladakh, including climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, were held at the Delhi-Haryana border.
"Some of our leaders and I have been released today. We will be taken to the hotels," Haneefa told ANI.
He expressed hope that Sonam Wangchuk would also be released soon.
"We have communicated with the officers; some of our people have been released. We hope Sonam Wangchuk will be released soon as well. The process is ongoing. Hopefully, we will head to Rajghat tomorrow," he said.
Wangchuk and his supporters were detained while marching from Leh to Delhi to demand constitutional safeguards for Ladakh. The march, which began on September 1, was set to culminate at Rajghat on October 2, Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary.
"We will have a meeting with the Ministry of Home Affairs, where we will discuss going to Rajghat. We are hoping for something positive from the MHA. We were detained and kept at the police guest house. The detention of Sonam Wangchuk is very unfortunate. They had a clear motive. We are going to meet Sonam Wangchuk and will discuss several matters; he, along with some women members, is on strike," Haneefa added.
Meanwhile, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Delhi High Court, challenging Wangchuk's detention.
The petition calls for the release of members of the Kargil Democratic Alliance and other individuals associated with the alliance, who were detained at the Singhu Border.
It also seeks the setting aside of the prohibitory order dated September 30, 2024, which presumably led to the detention.
Wangchuk, along with around 120 others from Ladakh, was detained on Monday night, September 30, 2024.
The march was organised by the Leh Apex Body (LAB) in coordination with the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), both of which have been leading an agitation for the past four years.
Additionally, another plea has been filed in the Delhi High Court, seeking permission for the petitioner and others to peacefully enter Delhi and conduct an environmental awareness march, scheduled to conclude at Rajghat on October 2, 2024. (ANI)
