Kolkata: Ex-students of Gurudas College booked for ragging, probe underway

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], August 30 (ANI): Two former students of Gurudas College in Kolkata were booked for alleged ragging of the present batch by pressurising it to participate in political programmes, the police said. 
A case has been registered at the Phoolbagan police station in Kolkata under the West Bengal Prohibition of Ragging in Educational Institutions Act 2000. 
According to the police, the principal of the Gurudas College filed a complaint against the two ex-students of the college and accused them of ragging the present ones by regularly visiting the college and pressuring them to participate in political programmes. 
The victim had alleged that some students, allegedly forced them to attend political events and allegedly threatened to cancel their registration if they failed to do so. The complaint was directly made to UGC, which directed the college authorities to take immediate action.
A probe is underway and further details are awaited. 
Earlier this month, A first-year undergraduate student, Swarnodip Kundu, died after falling from the second-floor balcony of the Jadavpur University’s main hostel on August 9.
His family alleged that he was a victim of ragging, evoking condemnation and outrage across the state.
The alleged suicide incident led to pandemonium in West Bengal politics with Education Minister Bratya Basu blaming Governor CV Ananda Bose for the demise of the student, to which, the governor reverted, "I’m a responsible Governor. I will be very glad if someone acknowledges it.”
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, earlier, launched an anti-ragging helpline number 18003455678 for all educational institutions in the state.
