Malappuram (Kerala) [India], Dec 13 (ANI): Members of the Malappuram District Committee (MDC) staged on Friday a unique protest against the rising prices of onions in the area by preparing 'biryani' without onions and feeding it to nearly 1,000 people.
Speaking to ANI, a member of the MDC said: "Since we are poor people, we can only afford the rice for the biryani. No leader or the government official has taken up the issue. Which is why the MDC had to come up with this initiative."
He further said the poor citizens of the area have no work. Thus the protest was all they could do.
The Central government has said that it would import an additional 12,660 metric tonnes of onions to deal with the current onion crisis.
The onions shall begin arriving in the country from December 27 onwards.
Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan has also written to all Chief Ministers asking them to take immediate anti-hoarding measures to ensure the supplies in the markets are augmented and stock holding limits are strictly enforced.
At various places, the rates of the kitchen commodity have breached the Rs 100 mark, with the prices reaching as high as Rs 200 in some places like Madurai in Tamil Nadu. (ANI)
