Mangalore (Karnataka) [India], May 22 (ANI): At least two vehicles parked on the road near Karangalapadi area in Mangaluru city were damaged after a branch from a tree fell on them following heavy rains, police said.
According to Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal, the incident took place around 9.30 pm on Tuesday.
"Mangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (MESCOM) officials arrived at the site and cleared parts of the tree branch. Two vehicles were damaged," the official said.
In another incident earlier, on Monday, a seven-year-old student died after the compound wall of the school at Newpadpu in Harekala collapsed.
Pre-monsoon showers have been pounding Mangaluru and Udupi, the twin districts of the coastal region, bringing copious amounts of rain to several areas.
Heavy rains lashed Beltangady, Mundaje, Charmady, Guruvayanakere, Koyyuru, Madyantharu, and Dharmasthala in Dakshina Kannada.
In Udupi district, Udupi city area, Manipal, Kundapur, Tekkatte, Basruru, and Karkala received substantial rainfall.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert from May 19 to 22, predicting rains to continue.
Fishermen were warned not to venture into the sea from May 18 to 22 due to a potential low-pressure system forming in the Bay of Bengal, which may bring turbulence to the Arabian Sea.
The Dakshina Kannada district administration instructed all fishing boats in the deep sea to return to shore immediately. (ANI)
