Judiciary inevitably linked with govt, legislature: Justice Chelameswar

Nagpur (Maharashtra) [India], Apr. 14 (ANI): Judiciary has an inevitable link with government and legislature, said Justice Jasti Chelameswar on Saturday.

Addressing 'Late NL Belekar Memorial Lecture Series' programme here, the Supreme Court judge said, "Judiciary is a branch of constitutional governance. It has an inevitable link with government and legislature."

He also commented on lawyers entering into politics.

"Most of the present generation lawyers are too busy pursuing law, money, and electoral politics. If politics is pursued with devotion and honesty, I believe politics is the highest calling which a human being can answer. Unfortunately, it has taken a different turn nowadays," said Justice Chelameswar, adding that "lawyers of the first half of the 20th century wonderfully mixed all these activities".

Talking about rule of law, he said, the rule of law has two components: a set of rules prescribed in the expected conduct of the subjects by the state, which are pre-published; and the making of such set of rules must necessarily be by a body of chosen representatives of people. These are the two basics of the rule of law."

He also said the success of any system depends on the successful implementation of the system.

Chelameswar was among the four Supreme Court judges who created history on January 12 this year when they addressed a press conference. Justices Madan B. Lokur, Kurien Joseph, Ranjan Gogoi and Jasti Chelameswar appealed to the nation to save their institution. (ANI)
