JNU students confine varsity officials

New Delhi [India], Feb.15 (ANI): A group of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students on Thursday confined top officials in the admin building of the varsity in a protest against the compulsory attendance system.

Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union-led students have been sitting at the Admin Bloc since 11 am demanding a meeting with the vice-chancellor Jagadesh Kumar.

JNU students and administration have been at loggerheads ever since the University last month imposed a compulsory attendance system.

The vice-chancellor, condemned the students' behavior and tweeted, "JNUSU led students have confined top officials of JNU in admin building since 11 AM. When they tried to go out of admin building, they were shouted at and forced to go back into the building. Unbecoming of students. Shouldn't such behaviour be condemned? "

He further said that even after JNU administration promised to meet the JNUSU officer bearers, they continued to misbehave.

The vice-chancellor further said that the JNU administration including him, regularly meets the students for their inputs adding that, "Students can meet with appointment or can meet every first Monday of the month in the afternoon without any appointment."

Meanwhile, All India Students Association (AISA) president Geeta Kumari said that they had not blocked the admin building and were only waiting for the vice-chancellor.

"We demand to meet the vice-chancellor. We have been waiting to meet him since the morning. We have not blocked any gate. We are only waiting for him," she said.

She further called for the withdrawal of the circular over mandatory attendance and a meeting of the academic council.(ANI)

The post also highlighted the 2020 COVID-19 oxygen crisis, when families stood in long lines outside hospitals and suppliers as the public health system collapsed.
