Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], October 27 (ANI): Mehbooba Mufti, President of the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (JKPDP), on Monday urged the government to take immediate steps to regularise wage workers in the union territory, emphasising that these workers deserve dignity and job security.
In a post on X, Mufti highlighted the challenges faced by nearly one lakh daily wage workers in Jammu and Kashmir, many of whom belong to the most marginalised sections of society. She called upon all Members of the Legislative Assembly, along with the ruling party, to come together and address the issue promptly.
"As the J&K Assembly reconvenes, one of the most pressing issues that requires immediate attention is the plight of nearly one lakh daily wagers. These workers, often from the most marginalised sections of society, have been the backbone of many government departments, ensuring their smooth functioning. It is crucial that all MLAs, along with the ruling party, unite to address this issue and ensure the regularisation of these workers, so they can receive the dignity and job security they rightfully deserve," said Mufti.
Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) leader Shammi Oberoi expressed happiness after the party secured three out of four Rajya Sabha seats in Jammu and Kashmir. Oberoi, who has been elected to the Rajya Sabha, added that National Conference leaders will raise key public issues.
"We are happy... We tried that we win the 4th seat as well but it could not happen... We will go to Delhi, meet our two Lok Sabha MPs and represent the people of Jammu and Kashmir... We will raise the issues decided in the upcoming party meeting," Oberoi told reporters.
Earlier, National Conference (NC) candidate Sajjad Ahmad Kichloo expressed gratitude to his party and supporters after winning a Rajya Sabha seat from Jammu and Kashmir. "I want to thank god and my party for this victory... I cannot even begin to explain how happy people are... We won the first three seats, but unfortunately, some votes were rejected, which is why we lost the fourth seat," Kichloo said.
The National Conference won three of the four Rajya Sabha seats from Jammu and Kashmir, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won one seat. These four seats had remained vacant since February 2021, following the retirement of Ghulam Nabi Azad, Mir Mohammad Fayaz, Shamsher Singh, and Nazir Ahmed Laway. (ANI)
