Ranchi (Jharkhand) [India], June 11 (ANI): Congress leader Alamgir Alam, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case, tendered his resignation as a cabinet minister and the leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP).
Notably, he submitted his resignation to the Chief Minister for the ministerial post, while he tendered his resignation to the Congress national president for the CLP leader post via the jail authorities.
Three weeks ago, Alamgir Alam had been sent to a six-day remand of the Enforcement Directorate by the Special PMLA court in Ranchi in connection with a money laundering case on Thursday.
Anil Kumar, Additional Solicitor General of India alleged that the entire cash was recovered from the household of his PS Sanjeev Lal. The ED had issued a summon to Alam to appear before the agency on May 14 at the Ranchi Zonal Office.
Both Sanjiv Lal, PS to Alam, and his domestic help, Jahangir Alam, were arrested by the ED after the raids and subsequent recovery of Rs 35.23 crore in cash from their premises in Jharkhand's Ranchi. Steel trunks filled with recovered cash were taken away from Alamgir Alam's residence in Ranchi on Monday night.
Reportedly, the duo was questioned by the ED overnight and later taken into custody.
Jharkhand's Congress President, Rajesh Thakur, had expressed discontent, stating that Alam, being a person of integrity, deserved better treatment under the law.
Thakur had said that Alam was not someone who would have fled and that the law should have respected him. He also emphasized that what happened to Alam was unjust.
"He appeared before the ED, he was questioned yesterday, and today, suddenly, the news of the arrest came. He was arrested after PM Modi's speech, so a political angle comes into this. A person honestly appeared before the ED and he was not someone who would have run away, so the law should have respected him," the Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee (JPCC) chief Thakur had said.
"If he wanted, he could have sought time by citing the election, but he didn't do that. In a way, what happened to him was not right. He could have been called for questioning even after a few days. People are seeing this with their naked eyes. People will reply to this," he had said.
The JPCC chief had also emphasized that they will fully cooperate with the legal process, adding, "We are against corruption, but if someone takes political advantage of it, then it is not right." (ANI)
