Indore (Madhya Pradesh) [India], January 22 (ANI): Indore Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav on Thursday inspected ongoing water supply restoration work in the Bhagirathpura locality to ensure a regular and adequate drinking water supply to residents.
During the inspection, the Mayor reviewed the progress of repair and maintenance work being carried out from the water tank premises to various points in the locality. He directed officials of the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) to complete the work within the stipulated time frame while maintaining quality standards.
Speaking to ANI, Mayor Bhargav said, "Our priority is to ensure that the situation in Bhagirathpura becomes completely normal. Wherever required, work on laying new drainage systems and drinking water supply lines is being carried out at a war footing. Today, we inspected the work of laying the main pipeline from the water tank and that work is now in its final stage."
"Thereafter, interconnection pipeline works in the remaining areas of the locality and other pending works will be completed swiftly. Our foremost priority is to normalise the water supply situation in Bhagirathpura," he added.
Meanwhile, when asked about the number of people still undergoing treatment after falling ill due to consumption of contaminated water, the mayor added that the number of patients was reducing in comparison to the previous situation, and the health department was continuously monitoring the situation.
The water contamination incident in Indore's Bhagirathpura sparked widespread criticism, as it claimed several lives and affected many families. Earlier, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav had announced Rs 2 lakh in financial assistance to the families of the deceased and free treatment for all affected people.
On January 17, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, visited Indore and met the families of the victims who died due to the consumption of contaminated drinking water and those undergoing treatment in the hospital.
The Congress leader accused the state BJP government of criminal negligence over the deaths and illnesses caused by contaminated drinking water in the Bhagirathpura area of Indore, saying the government must take responsibility and ensure compensation and assistance to the affected families. (ANI)
