Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) [India], November 22 (ANI): Reacting to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's remarks on Gautam Adani, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Bhopal, Rameshwar Sharma, stated that the Indian judiciary, legal system, and constitution are impartial and do not discriminate.
After US prosecutors charged Gautam Adani and others in an alleged bribery case, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Thursday demanded Adani's arrest, claiming it is "clear" and "established" that the Adani Group Chairman has violated both American and Indian laws.
The Leader of the Opposition also expressed concern, questioning why Adani remains a "free man" in India. He said, "Chief Ministers have been arrested, and Adani has allegedly committed a Rs2,000 crore scam among others, but there is no investigation."
Responding to the statement, BJP MLA Rameshwar Sharma remarked, "No government can deliberately imprison any Chief Minister. Actions are taken only if crimes are committed or fall under the purview of the law. The Supreme Court and the Constitution of India are paramount. Those found guilty under the Constitution face legal consequences."
Addressing Adani's case, Sharma added, "When the Congress was in power in Rajasthan, the Ashok Gehlot government also awarded contracts to Adani. Rahul Gandhi should write a letter to demand an investigation into that. When Congress seeks Adani's involvement in projects, he is acceptable; now, they demand an investigation. Gandhi has been criticising Adani for years without evidence. Prove it. The Indian judiciary, legal system, and Constitution are fair and unbiased."
At a press conference in Delhi, Rahul Gandhi said, "Wherever there is corruption, it should be investigated. But the investigation must begin with Adani. Unless he is arrested, it won't be credible. Arrest Adani, interrogate him, and identify everyone involved. Ultimately, Narendra Modi's name will emerge, as BJP's funding structure is tied to him. Even if the Prime Minister wants to act, he cannot, as Adani has effectively hijacked the country. India is in Adani's grip."
Meanwhile, the Adani Group strongly refuted the bribery allegations made by the US Department of Justice and the US Securities and Exchange Commission, labelling them baseless. An Adani Group spokesperson stated that all legal options would be pursued.
"The allegations by the US Department of Justice and the US Securities and Exchange Commission against directors of Adani Green are baseless and unfounded," the statement read.
The group emphasised a key aspect of the legal proceedings, noting, "As stated by the US Department of Justice, 'the charges in the indictment are allegations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.' We will pursue all possible legal recourse."
Amid these allegations, Adani Green Energy informed stock exchanges that its subsidiaries have decided to defer their planned US dollar-denominated bond offerings.
"In light of these developments, our subsidiaries have decided not to proceed with the proposed USD-denominated bond offerings," it said.
US prosecutors had charged Gautam Adani and others in an alleged solar energy contract bribery case. A five-count criminal indictment was unsealed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York, implicating prominent Indian executives, including Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani, in an alleged bribery and fraud scheme.
