Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], January 25 (ANI): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday issued an Orange Alert for parts of Himachal Pradesh, warning of widespread rain and snowfall from the night of January 26 till the morning of January 28, under the influence of an active western disturbance.
According to the Meteorological Centre, Shimla, isolated spells of heavy rainfall and snowfall are very likely on January 27, particularly in the high-altitude districts of Chamba, Kullu, Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti.
The IMD forecast said that light to moderate snowfall, with a few intense spells, is expected over high hills and adjoining mid-hill areas from late night of January 26. Meanwhile, low hills and plains, along with nearby mid-hill regions, are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall on January 27.
Popular tourist destinations, including Shimla, Manali, Kufri, Narkanda, Solang Valley, Naldehra and Sissu, are also expected to witness rain and snowfall, potentially affecting travel and outdoor activities.
The weather department has further cautioned that day temperatures may drop by 4 to 8 degrees Celsius on January 27, leading to cold day conditions in several districts, including Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur, and Mandi, for which a Yellow Alert has been issued.
Additionally, the IMD warned of hailstorms at isolated places in Una, Bilaspur, Solan and Sirmaur, and thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 50-70 kmph in several parts of the state during January 26-27.
The department advised residents and tourists to avoid vulnerable areas, limit outdoor activities, and follow advisories issued by the state government, warning that slippery roads, reduced visibility, traffic disruptions and damage to crops and horticulture are likely during the period.
Authorities have been urged to remain on alert to minimise disruption to essential services amid expected adverse weather conditions. (ANI)
