New Delhi [India], September 22 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party chief JP Nadda said on Friday that the Women's Reservation Bill passed in the Parliament is a historic moment and will be remembered for a long period of time.
"For all of us, this is a historic moment that will be registered in history in times to come and remembered for a very long time. We are fortunate to be a witness to such a moment...," Nadda said at the BJP headquarters.
He further credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for ensuring that the bill gets passed.
"...this historic moment filled with emotions for which we all have been waiting for a long time was made possible because of PM Modi's timely introduction of 'Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam' (Women's Reservation Bill) and getting the bill passed," said Nadda.
The speech from the BJP chief came at the BJP HQ in Delhi where the party workers and BJP Mahila Morcha had gathered to welcome PM Modi and other senior party leaders in an atmosphere of celebration for the passing of the Women's Reservation Bill.
The Upper House, on Thursday, passed the bill, which provides 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha as well as the state legislative assemblies, unanimously, with 214 members voting in support and none against.
Following the passage of the bill in Parliament, chants of 'Modi Modi' were raised by women MPs as they took turns to thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the passage of the draft legislation.
Women members from both Houses of Parliament, including PT Usha, and Union Ministers Meenakashi Lekhi and Smriti Irani, were all smiles as they presented a bouquet to Prime Minister Modi on the historic passage of the Bill in Parliament.
Later, both the Houses of Parliament were adjourned sine die.
Earlier, on Wednesday, the Bill aced the legislative test in the Lok Sabha as it was passed by a brute majority of 454 votes in favour and just 2 against. (ANI)
