Hindu priests oppose New Year's celebrations in Bengaluru

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India] Dec 29 (ANI): Some Hindu priests on Friday opposed the idea of New Year's celebrations in Bengaluru claiming it is against the Indian tradition.

They have also filed a petition in the court to stay the celebration of New Year in pubs, bars and in restaurants.

"Our New Year starts on 'Ugadi'. We are asking that New Year should not be celebrated on December 31 night and January 1 as in no celebrations at all. We are demanding to stop any sort of celebrations in bars and pubs, especially in Mahatama Gandhi (MG) road," Brahmand Swamy of Valmiki Mutt told ANI.

'Ugadi' marks the onset of a new season and change in astrological positions wherein the temples should celebrate it and not English New Year.

Even instructions to temples in Andhra Pradesh have been given to not celebrate New Year on January 1 by the state Endowments Department, which said it is not an 'Indian Vedic culture'. (ANI)
