Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], August 15 (ANI): Himachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri reiterated the demand for the formation of a Himalayan Regiment in the Army on Thursday.
Speaking at a ceremony to celebrate the 78th Independence Day, he urged the central government to reconsider its stance on regional regiments in light of current geopolitical tensions.
He argued that such a move would foster patriotism and honour the state's contributions to national security. He highlighted the valour of Himachal Pradesh's soldiers, noting that the state has won four Param Vir Chakras, including the first ever awarded.
Agnihotri also expressed deep concern over the state's ongoing disaster crisis.
He said that Himachal Pradesh has endured significant losses this year, with over 200 lives lost and damages amounting to around Rs 1,000 crore. Last year's disaster had similarly devastating impacts, with over 500 casualties. Despite these challenges, he criticised the central government for its lack of support, urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other Union ministers to visit the state and provide the necessary financial assistance.
Agnihotri also announced the upcoming construction of the world's second-longest ropeway in Shimla and detailed other state development initiatives, such as the addition of 256 new buses to the HRTC fleet and advancements in cooperative institution computerisation.
Agnihotri also took the opportunity to criticise the BJP, accusing it of attempting to destabilise the state government while simultaneously talking about reform and stability. He called on the Prime Minister to reconsider his statements about national elections and instead focus on supporting Himachal Pradesh during this period of recovery and reconstruction.
The Independence Day celebrations in Shimla were marked by calls for greater regional recognition and urgent disaster relief, reflecting the state's ongoing struggles and its demands for increased central support.
Shimla hosted a district-level celebration on the 78th Independence Day, marked by foggy weather, speeches, and a parade. Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri, the chief guest, hoisted the national flag and inspected the parade, which featured contingents from the Police, Home Guard, Traffic Police, NCC, NSS, Scout and Guide, and a band.
