Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], December 21 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir Congress chief Tariq Hameed Karra, accompanied by party workers, led a protest against the Viksit Bharat G RAM-G Bill in Srinagar on Sunday.
Speaking to reporters, Karra responded to J&K CM Omar Abdullah's recent statement that he has no complaints with the Modi-led government at the Centre, saying that "Maybe Omar Abdullah is making such statements because of some compulsion because he has been contradicting his own statements. The ground reality is that the work that was supposed to be done with appropriate funding is not being done. How will the state government be able to incur this burden of an additional 40%?... We are not concerned about the renaming of MNREGA. You can name it after any god for all we care. We are concerned with the works which will now not be done..."
Earlier, Omar Abdullah said, "I am not one of those people who play politics and deceive others. Where the central government has provided help, I say so, and where there has been any shortcoming on the part of the Centre, I say that too. I have said that in other matters, the Centre has left no room for complaint."
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said the fundamental character of MGNREGA has been changed, announcing that the Congress Working Committee meeting scheduled for December 27 will finalise an action plan for a nationwide movement across all states against the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) (VB-G-RAM-G) Bill passed in Parliament.
Speaking to ANI, Ramesh said the new legislation has taken away employment opportunities from rural, deprived and exploited sections of society. "The fundamental character of MGNREGA has been changed; the basic structure of the scheme has been altered. The employment that was being provided to rural, deprived, and exploited people has been taken away," he said.
He explained that MGNREGA was based on three key principles: providing employment, creating local infrastructure through employment to ensure sustainable livelihoods, and decision-making at the level of the Gram Panchayat. Ramesh alleged that the new law shifts this authority to the Centre. "Previously, this was decided by the Gram Panchayat, but now the central government will decide who, where, and when employment will be provided," he said. (ANI)
