Have asked PM Modi for relief fund to curb water logging in Chennai: Palaniswami

Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], Nov 11 (ANI): Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Saturday said his government has asked for relief fund from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to curb the issue of water logging caused due to heavy rainfall in Chennai.

"When PM Modi came to Chennai he discussed the issue of rain water logging, so we asked for relief fund from the Central Government and have sent a proposal on the same," Palaniswami said in a press conference here.

However, he said, "Today there is no water logging in Chennai due to the speedy work of ministers and officials."

Hailing former chief minister J Jayalalitha, who passed away last year, Palaniswami asserted that for rain water logging in low line area, she released Rs 434 crore for rain water drainage, adding that "Most of it was finished."

Speaking about the monsoon situation in the state, the chief minister said, "We were in a meeting with Deputy Chief Minister and state officials on steps to be taken regarding North east monsoon rain."

He also said that monsoon has just started here and will last till December.

Earlier on November 3, heavy rains lashed several parts of Chennai leading to water logging and traffic jams in many areas.

Chennai has been witnessing isolated rains for the past few days.

Continuous rainfall has disrupted lives of people, with authorities being forced to shut schools and colleges.

Rainwater had accumulated at several areas on the outskirts of Chennai, while residents have to struggle through knee-deep water outside their homes. (ANI)
