Narmada (Gujarat) [India], August 11 (ANI): Five gates of Sardar Sarovar dam were opened on Sunday morning in the Narmada district of Gujarat and around 1 lakh cusecs of water was released.
As a precautionary measure, the villages located in the coastal areas around the Narmada River have been put on alert. Villages on the banks of Narmada in Bharuch and Vadodara have also been alerted.
In this monsoon season, for the very first time, the water level of the Narmada River reached 134.50 metres and is just 4 metres away from the maximum level. The maximum surface of the dam is 138.68 meters.
Around 87 per cent of the capacity of the Narmada River has been exhausted.
The Sardar Sarovar Dam is a dam built on the Narmada River near the town of Kevadiya, in the Narmada district of Gujarat. The dam was constructed to provide water and electricity to the Indian states of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan.
According to the data of the Met Centre Ahmedabad, a yellow alert has been issued for the state of the Gujarat for August 11 and August 12.
Earlier on August 5, Vansda Police in Gujarat's Navsari rescued several tourists who were stranded in Vangan Village after recent heavy rainfall left the Kaveri river in spate.
Navsari police also shared a video of the rescue operation.
Visuals showed tourists being rescued after holding on to a rope.
Meanwhile, heavy rainfall has caused severe flooding in Gujarat's Valsad with rising water levels in the Auranga River. People from low-lying areas of the region have shifted to safe places.
The state has witnessed severe downpours for the last few days. (ANI)
