New Delhi [India], July 31 (ANI): On the upcoming visit to Wayanad by Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi's visit to Wayanad, BJP MP Tejasvi Surya raised questions and said that Union Minister George Kurian has been on the ground for the past two to three days. He added that while Kurian's plane is able to land, the planes carrying Rahul and Priyanka are unable to do so.
Congress top brass Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra are scheduled to visit the disaster-stricken region of Wayanad on Thursday, August 1. They will be going to meet the families affected by the recent landslide that has claimed several lives in the hilly areas of Meppadi in Wayanad, Kerala. They will also be visiting the relief camps that were set up at the schools and medical institutes in Meppadi.
While speaking with ANI, Surya said, "Why haven't they gone till now? They gave the excuse that chartered planes wouldn't be able to land there. Our Union Minister George Kurian has been on the ground there for the last two-three days."
Surya further stated that Kurien is overseeing the rescue operation in Wayanad under the directions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "He is supervising the rescue and relief operation on the direction of the Prime Minister. George Kurien's plane can land, but 'Yuvraj' and Priyanka ji's plane cannot land? This shows their commitment to the people who elected them."
Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday urged the Centre to extend all possible help to the people of Wayanad. Speaking in the Lok Sabha during a brief discussion on the landslide tragedy, Rahul Gandhi, who is the Leader of Opposition in the House and a former MP from Wayanad, said the area is ecologically fragile and technological solutions to prevent mishaps should be looked into.
"It is a huge tragedy in Wayanad, and the Military is doing a good job there. I think it's essential that we support the people of Wayanad and give with as much assistance as possible. I request the government to aid the people of Wayanad during this difficult time," Gandhi said.
Search and rescue operations are continuing at landslide-affected Chooralmala in Wayanad. 1200 personnel from the Indian Army, DSC centre, Territorial Army, NDRF, Indian Navy and IAF are deployed in the region. (ANI)
