Kupwara (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], November 7 (ANI): Tanveer Ahmad, a young entrepreneur from Tanghdar village in Kupwara district, Jammu and Kashmir, has revolutionised the local fish market with his innovative fish farming project.
After completing his education, Tanveer established the Rainbow Trout Fish Farm in Tanghdar, aiming to meet the growing demand for fresh fish in the area.
The people of Tanghdar relied on fish supplies from distant markets in Kupwara or even Srinagar, a journey that often took hours over treacherous mountain roads.
The result was limited availability and higher prices of the fish. Realising this gap, Tanveer took the bold step of establishing a local fish farm, which aims not only to provide fresh and affordable fish to the residents but also to generate employment opportunities for local youth.
Speaking to ANI, he said, "I started fish farming in 2022...I was running a general store... Initially, it wasn't easy, but the farm picked up pace from 2023...The Department of Fisheries helped me with the guidance and subsidy of 60%-40% at that time...meaning I had to put 60% of funds and the department will give away the rest 40%...now it is even more."
With support from the Fisheries Department and guidance from experts, Tanveer overcame initial challenges, including the cold climate and limited resources. His farm breeds Rainbow Trout and Common Carp, highly sought-after species for their taste and nutritional value.
"It has benefitted the community...They used to consume fish that was 4-6 months old...Now they get the fresh fish...We also offer home delivery...Our fishes are delivered across Srinagar, Kupwara, and Baramulla...," he said.
Fish farming is a sustainable, profitable, and fulfilling societal need. Starting a fish farm in Tanghdar wasn't easy. The cold climate and limited resources posed significant hurdles. With support from the Fisheries Department and guidance from agricultural experts, Tanveer successfully established modern fish ponds designed to maintain optimal water temperatures and oxygen levels.
The farm breeds "Rainbow Trout" and "Common Carp", both of which are highly sought after for their taste and nutritional value. The initiative has already begun to show results. Residents now have access to fresh fish within their own farm, reducing dependence on outside markets. His venture has inspired other young people to explore fish farming as a viable livelihood option.
Tanveer plans to expand his farm, introduce additional fish species, and explore eco-tourism opportunities related to aquaculture. His dream is to make Tanghdar known not just for its natural beauty, but also for sustainable fish farming.
The initiative has not only improved access to fresh fish but also created employment opportunities for local youth. Tanveer's success story has inspired others to explore fish farming as a viable livelihood option. (ANI)
