Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], Feb 12 (ANI): Security forces on Tuesday gunned down a terrorist, who had helped in the escape of a top jailed commander of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) by carrying out an attack at a hospital here a year back.
A Havaldar of the Army Baljeet Singh was also killed while another soldier sustained injuries in the encounter in Ratnipora area of Pulwama district in Kashmir, police said.
Inspector General of Kashmir S P Pani said the killed militant was involved in helping in the escape of top Lashkar commander Naved Jutt last year.
Jutt, a 20-year-old Pakistani national, was killed in an encounter with security forces a few months back.
On February 8, 2018, some gunmen carried out an attack at the government hospital here when Jutt was brought from the Srinagar Central jail for a purported medical check-up.
The gunmen killed two policemen escorting Jutt and escaped along with him. Jutt was in jail since 2016.
In today’s encounter, two security force personnel sustained gunshot injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
However, one of them, Havaldar Baljeet Singh, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, police said.
Singh, who hailed from Karnal in Haryana, is survived by his wife and two children.
Security forces and the state police had launched a search and cordon operation after receiving a tip-off about the presence of terrorists in Ratnipora area.
The police said the security forces seized arms and ammunition from the encounter site. A case has been registered and a probe initiated. (ANI)
