New Delhi [India], Apr 27 (ANI): A review petition has been filed before the Supreme Court in connection with a plea requesting the court to issue guidelines to the Centre to frame rules regarding prevention of fake news on social media platforms.
The review petition filed by lawyer Anuja Kapur sought a direction from the court to revisit its order of April 8, which had dismissed the petition filed earlier on the issue.
Kapur also sought a direction from the apex court to grant her an oral hearing on the present petition and pass any such further orders as the court may deem fit.
She also stated in her petition that the top court should revisit its earlier order of April 8 in which it had dismissed her petition stating that there is no merit in her plea.
On March 2, Kapur had knocked the doors of the apex court seeking directions or guidelines to the Centre to frame rules to stop circulation and publication of fake news in social media platforms and other networking sites.
"Fake news is a menace. It should be stopped. Thereby the SC should pass appropriate guidelines as soon as possible on the issue. The Apex Court should direct the UOI to frame rules to stop fake news and circulating fake news," her petition stated.
A three-judge bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, had, in its April 8 order, dismissed Kapur's petition saying, "Having heard the petitioner who is appearing in person and upon perusing the relevant material, we are not inclined to entertain the writ petition. The same is, accordingly, dismissed."
In a 127-page petition, Kapur sought a direction to the Centre to constitute a committee responsible for curbing the menace of fake news.
She had also claimed in her petition that there are no guidelines and punishments for those who are promoting fake news.
"There are no accountabilities, liabilities and responsibilities to restrict or counter restrict fake news by organising press-conference or putting it on the concerned official website by various concerned authorities for the general public to access the authenticated news," Kapur claimed in her petition.
