New Delhi (India), March 11 (ANI): Amid a controversy over Lok Sabha poll dates coinciding with Ramzan, senior BJP leader and Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Monday said that in the past also elections have been held during the Muslim holy period.
In May last year, the BJP candidate lost in Kairana in Uttar Pradesh to RLD's Tabassum Hasan who was supported by Congress, Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party.
"Those who fast during Ramzan have no issues with the dates but some political leaders are raising objections," Prasad said.
"Last year even, the Kairana Lok Sabha bypoll was conducted in the month of Ramzan and BJP lost the election and they won. What these leaders are alleging shows their nervousness," he said.
The Election Commission had on Sunday announced the schedule for Lok Sabha elections. The dates for the seven phases are April 11, April 18, April 23, April 29, May 6, May 12 and May 19. The counting of votes will be held on May 23. (ANI)
