DUSU Vice-President eyes top post

New Delhi [India], November 20 (ANI): The Vice-President of Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) Shakti Singh, has staked claim for the top post of the Union after Ankiv Baisoya resigned from the Presidentship last week following his suspension from the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in a fake degree row.
In a memorandum submitted to Delhi University Vice-chancellor Yogesh Tyagi on Monday, Shakti claimed that the post of the DUSU president is an important one and cannot be left vacant for long as it will cause irreparable damage to the interest of common students of University.
In his letter to the Vice Chancellor, Shakti cited relevant provisions of Lyngdoh Committee on student's elections in colleges and universities that states:
"In the event of any major post of office bearer falling vacant within two months of elections, re-elections should be conducted, otherwise the vice president may be promoted to the post of president, and Joint Secretary to the post of Secretary, as the case may be."
Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court on Tuesday reserved its judgment on a plea filed by National Students' Union of India (NSUI) candidate Sunny Chillar seeking a re-election and action against Ankiv Baisoya.
The High Court bench further observed that the Lyngdoh's recommendation is silent over the issue of conducting an inquiry after more than two months of the elections taking place.
The petitioner's counsel -- Senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram told the court that the University dragged the issue till November 12 to avail the second part the rule of the Lyngdoh's recommendation. He further requested the court to order fresh elections as the recommendation is allegedly silent on this issue.
A first information report (FIR) was also filed against the former DUSU President Baisoya on complaints of the Buddhist department of the university claiming that Baisoya used a fake degree to claim admission and contest elections.
It is pertinent to mention that DUSU vice-president won his seat with the highest margin of votes as the DUSU election results were announced on 13 September. However, soon after Ankiv took charge as DUSU president he got mired into the fake-degree row with National Students' Union of India (NSUI) alleging him of producing fake degree from Tamil Nadu's Thiruvalluvar University for taking admission in DU. After which the DU set up an inquiry committee to investigate the matter.(ANI)
