New Delhi [India], September 21 (ANI): DMK MP Kanimozhi expressed concern on Thursday over the relatively long implementation time of the Women's Reservation Bill. She said that there is no clear information on when the provisions of the bill will be implemented.
"We all thought it would be a golden moment (passing of the Women's Reservation Bill) because we thought it would be implemented as soon as possible but now we don't know (when it will be implemented). The implementation can take 10, 15 or 20 years because it has a lot of conditions," Kanimozhi told ANI.
"It says delimitation and census have to be done (before the implementation). We don’t know how long it is going to take. We passed the Bill but the proof of the pudding is in the implementing it," she added.
According to the Bill, reservation of one third of seats for women in Lok Sabha and state assemblies will come into effect after an exercise of delimitation using the data from the first Census that is conducted after the act is enacted.
Women's Reservation Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday with near unanimity with 454 members voting in favour and only two members opposing it.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that the Parliament passing the Women's Reservation Bill will lead to a new confidence in the people of the country.
"This Bill will lead to a new confidence in the people of the country. All members and political parties have played a significant role in empowering women and enhancing 'Nari Shakti'. Let us give the country a strong message," PM Modi said in Rajya Sabha before voting on the bill.
He sought unanimous support for the Bill.
He said there has been a discussion on the Women’s Reservation Bill in the two Houses for the past two days and over 132 members took part in the meaningful discussion which will be helpful.
Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal gave a brief reply to the day-long debate on the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Eighth Amendment) Bill, 2023 in Rajya Sabha and said it will be implemented after following due processes.
The 'Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam' is the first bill that will be passed by Parliament after it shifted to the new Parliament building on Tuesday.  The bill was passed by Lok Sabha on Wednesday. (ANI)
