Cold wave to prevail in Delhi, smog-free days ahead

New Delhi [India], Dec 18 (ANI): Delhi has been witnessing chilly winter mornings and nights for the last few days.

The reason for the chilly days in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) is due to the drop in the mercury levels.

After witnessing one of the coldest days of the season on December 14, both the maximums and minimums in Delhi and NCR increased, but remained in single digits only.

Yesterday's temperatures recorded by both Palam and Safdarjung observatories settled at 22.2 and 23.6 degrees Celsius respectively. The minimums during the similar time frame were 9.8 and 7.5 degrees Celsius.

On Sunday, 19 trains were running late, two rescheduled and eight were cancelled due to low visibility in Delhi.

As per Skymet Weather, the reason for this weather condition prevailing over Delhi and NCR can be attributed to the seasonal weather pattern.

It earlier reported that the region was under the influence of an active western disturbance, that also gave some widespread rain over Delhi NCR on December 11-12.

Additionally, it resulted in the snow in the Western Himalayan region. It was after the passage of this weather system, that dry and cool winds from the snow-clad hills of northern India blew over the region. The wind speed also paced up to moderate.

The combined effect of all these factors resulted in dropping of temperatures and curtailing of pollution levels as well. Due to this, the wintery chill could be felt in parts of Delhi and NCR.

As the wind speed is still moderate, dense fog formation is also not taking place. Moreover, as of now, the pollution levels are also not expected to make a comeback.

Thus, for the next 3-4 days, Delhiites are expected to witness a fog and smog free Delhi. (ANI)
