As per IMD a 'cold day' is acknowledged if the maximum temperature drops between 4.5 and 6.4 degrees below the seasonal norm. If temperatures fall 6.5 degrees below the normal range for the season, it is labeled a severe cold day.
Cold to severe cold day conditions prevailed at many places over Delhi, Haryana and Chandigarh, Punjab and Rajasthan and at isolated pockets over North Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday.
Thick fog engulfed the national capital, effecting visibility and leading to delay of flights to and from Delhi.

Amid the biting cold outside, the night shelters in Delhi provide a refuge to homeless people, who live on the streets and have nowhere else to go in the cold. The shelters offer blankets, beds, hot water, and food to those seeking shelter.

In light of extreme cold wave and IMD's yellow alert, Delhi Government's Directorate of Education ordered an extension of winter Vacation in all government, Government-aided and Unaided Recognised Private Schools of Delhi till January 10, however the Delhi Government later on retracted the order.
