New Delhi [India], July 22 (ANI): Delhi Police on the direction of Commissioner of Police Sanjay Arora launched a campaign against Chinese manjha (kite string) and conducted searches across all districts of Delhi and seized 120 Chinese manjha rolls.
"120 Chinese manjha rolls were seized and legal action was taken against 44 people. CP has given instructions to DCPs and action taken is being monitored to ensure strict action on the ground," an official statement from Delhi police said.
The use of Chinese Manjha was banned by the government in 2017.
The police also noted that there is a need for uniformity in legal action.
"Some Police Stations are registering FIRS u/s 188 IPC (which is punishable with imprisonment for one month or with fine which may extend to two hundred rupees, or with both) and a few Police Stations are preparing Kalandras u/s 5/15 of the Environment (Protection) Act, (which is punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to five years or with a fine up to Rs. 1 lakh, or with both). It must be ensured that where ever manufacture sale, storage, purchase and use of thread made of nylon, synthetic material and/or floated with synthetic substance which is non-biodegradable (commonly known as Chinese Manjha), for kite flying is detected, correct legal action must be taken by invoking Environment (Protection) Act," they said.
"It is expected that sustained action will be taken to detect more cases and affect quality seizures to act as deterrents in our efforts to eradicate Chinese Manjha for kite flying," the police added. (ANI)
