New Delhi [India], October 11 (ANI): Delhi Police on Thursday claimed to have busted an interstate gang of thieves involved in theft of Remote Radio Units (RRUs) from mobile towers across the national capital and other states.
According to officials, six members of the gang have been arrested, and 130 stolen RRUs, valued at approximately Rs 4 crore, were seized from their possession. The police have solved 47 theft cases reported in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam, and West Bengal.
A Remote Radio Unit (RRU), also known as Remote Radio Head (RRH), is indeed a crucial component of wireless base stations, facilitating communication between wireless devices and networks. Its primary function is to convert digital signals from the base station into radio frequency (RF) signals that can be transmitted wirelessly.
"We received information from a secret informer about an interstate gang involved in RRU thefts," a senior Delhi Police official said.
"Our team analyzed data from FIRs filed in Delhi-NCR and other states, and used technical expertise and artificial intelligence to track down the gang," he added.
Officials said thata police trap was laid near Pandav Nagar, where three persons were caught. They were identified as Adil (25), Sadiq (21), and Adnan (22) -- all residents of UP's Meerut.
"One of them was found carrying a stolen RRU, which had been reported stolen in a case registered at Karawal Nagar Police Station in Northeast Delhi," they said.
During interrogation, the accused confessed to stealing RRUs from mobile towers across various states.
Police subsequently recovered 126 RRUs from a warehouse in Pandav Nagar, with 43 units confirmed stolen from various police jurisdictions (Delhi - 16, UP - 1, Assam - 20, Bihar - 2, Jharkhand - 2, West Bengal - 2).
"The gang had accumulated the stolen RRUs to export them abroad," officials said. "Further investigations are underway to trace the source of the recovered RRUs and to identify other people or groups involved in the plan to export them," they added.
Police also recovered toolkits used to dismantle the RRUs from mobile towers. (ANI)
