New Delhi [India], October 10 (ANI): Delhi's Tourism Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Saurabh Bharadwaj inaugurated the Heritage Walk Festival organised by the Delhi Tourism Department on Thursday.
The festival began today at the Mutiny Memorial, Kamla Nehru Ridge, Civil Lines, and will run till December 31.
As per an official release, participants will explore 100 different historical sites across Delhi. Like previous years, the event is aimed at showcasing Delhi's centuries-old heritage to the city, the nation, and the world, positioning Delhi as a key tourist destination.
The Heritage Walk Festival began today at the Mutiny Memorial, located in Kamla Nehru Ridge, Civil Lines. This memorial was built by the British during the 1857 freedom struggle to honour British officers and their allies who died in battle.
However, it not only symbolises the deaths of British officials and their allies but also stands as a symbol of India's Independence Movement. It represents how freedom fighters shook the very foundations of British rule during the struggle for independence, the press release stated.
During the Heritage Walk, Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj interacted with journalists, saying that there are hundreds of hidden heritage sites in Delhi that the public and the younger generation are unaware of.
Through such programs, he stated, "the Delhi Tourism Department aims to present the history of these priceless heritage sites to the people of Delhi and the nation. The goal is to make Delhi a major attraction not only in the country but also globally, increasing the interest of tourists from other states and abroad."
The Minister highlighted that these heritage sites represent Delhi's centuries-old history and are incredibly valuable. He added, "Preserving them and sharing their history with the masses is a priority for the Delhi Tourism Department."
As per the relase, Saurabh Bharadwaj further added that the Department has been organising such programs periodically. Continuing this tradition, this year's 80-day Heritage Walk Festival has been organised under the leadership of Arvind Kejriwal, and similar events will be held in the future as well.
The Festival will run from October 10 to December 31, 2024, covering around 100 heritage sites across the city. During this 80-day event, the hidden history of these sites, which remains largely unknown to the younger generation, will be shared with the public and youth of Delhi.
The Tourism Department aims to bring forth Delhi's lesser-known historical heritage and ensure that the younger generation becomes aware of this centuries-old history. The goal is to encourage them to preserve these legacies for future generations so that our ancestors' stories live on.
The general public can also participate in the Heritage Walk Festival by purchasing a ticket for a nominal fee set by the Department. This ticket allows anyone to join the walk and explore Delhi's rich heritage through the organised program. (ANI)
